Cindy Gutierrez-Fasolino is the Development Executive for the Sunrise Association, where she plays a crucial role in raising funds to support children battling pediatric cancer. She is also a devoted mother to three daughters: Isabella (19), Gabriella (17), and Sophia (14).
What was your career before working at the Sunrise Association?
Before joining the Sunrise Association, I was a stay-at-home mom for 18 years. During that time, I also worked in Public Relations, Marketing, Coordination, and Business Development.
I’ve also been an active volunteer since my children started Kindergarten. I served on the Booster Club, the Principal Advisory Committee, and co-founded the Rye Neck Alumni Association, which focuses on providing scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
Where are you now?
Recently I became the Development Executive for the Sunrise Association, an organization dedicated to supporting children battling pediatric cancer. My role involves raising funds to provide free, year-round programs, including summer camps and activities, for these children and their siblings. Our mission is to bring joy, comfort, and a sense of normalcy to these brave children and their families. Through organizing fundraising events and engaging with the community, I help ensure that every child, regardless of financial circumstances, has access to these life-enhancing experiences.
How did you get involved with the Sunrise Association?
I became involved with the Sunrise Association out of a deep desire to positively impact the lives of children facing serious challenges. The organization’s mission resonated with my belief in the importance of providing joy and support to children battling pediatric cancer. Sunrise works towards a world where cancer will not be the defining factor in a child’s life; where children and families navigating the difficult world of pediatric cancer can find hope, and love and of course that extra special ray of sunshine. They envision a future where our impact extends far and wide, transforming the lives of children facing the challenges of cancer treatment. Initially, I discovered the organization through online research and felt an immediate connection to their cause. Witnessing the difference they made in the lives of these children and their families inspired me to get more involved. It quickly became my passion to help bring light and joy into the lives of these brave children and their families.
Why did you choose this type of work?
Working with the Sunrise Association reflects my deep commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children facing incredibly tough challenges. Pediatric cancer is not just a medical battle but also an emotional and psychological one for the children and their families. By working with an organization that provides joy, support, and a sense of normalcy, I feel I am helping to bring light into their lives during a dark time. The work allows me to combine compassion with action, creating both immediate and lasting impacts. Knowing that the funds we raise directly contribute to creating happy memories for these children is incredibly fulfilling.
What have you learned in the process of working on this?
Through this work, I’ve learned the profound impact that even small acts of kindness can have on others' lives. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the (emotional and financial) challenges faced by children with pediatric cancer and their families, and how crucial it is to offer them joy and support during such difficult times. This would not be possible without support from our sponsors and communities who donate to us. This experience has also taught me the value of community and the power of collective effort. Together, we can create lasting, positive change, and I’ve learned that persistence and compassion are key to making that happen.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that this work allows me to blend compassion with action, creating both immediate and lasting impacts. Knowing that the funds we raise directly contribute to creating happy memories for these children is incredibly fulfilling. It’s about offering hope and joy to those who need it most, beyond just financial support.
What is the biggest challenge you face?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is coming to terms with the fact that asking people for money isn’t about me. I had to realize that my request is about giving children the chance to experience joy—something they might not have the opportunity to feel otherwise. It’s about creating joyful memories that could make a real difference in their lives.
What is your best tip for others looking to give back to the community?
My best tip is to start with what you’re passionate about. Find a cause that resonates with you personally, and begin with small, meaningful actions. Whether it’s donating time, resources, or skills, every contribution matters. Consistency is key—showing up regularly makes a bigger impact than you might realize.
For moms: Lead by example. Involve your children in your efforts to give back, no matter how small the task. This not only strengthens your bond but also teaches them the importance of kindness, empathy, and community from an early age. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to spend quality time together while making a positive difference.
If this is a second “career” for you, do you have advice regarding reinventing yourself?
Don’t be afraid to take that first step. It will be challenging, but trust that you can walk through it.
Other fun details about you:
I wouldn’t be here today without my parents. My father came to this country from Chile with just $5 hidden in his socks, fleeing a military dictatorship, and dreaming of a better life in America. He has far exceeded any expectations he had of the American Dream. My parents dedicated their lives to their children, and now it’s my turn to give back to those who need it most. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do this.
What do you think is important for other moms to know?
It’s important for other moms to know that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. Motherhood is a journey filled with both joy and challenges, and it’s normal to face uncertainty along the way. What matters most is being present for your children and yourself—embracing the moments, both big and small, without striving for perfection.
After my divorce, I went through a challenging and transformative experience, but it doesn’t define who you are or your ability to be a great mom. Allow yourself the grace to navigate this new chapter, and remember that your well-being is just as important as your children’s.
Focus on building a support network—whether it’s family, friends, or a community group—that can offer encouragement and practical help. It’s also important to communicate openly with your children, reassuring them that while life may look different, they are still deeply loved and supported.
Rediscovering your own identity and passions can be empowering during this time. Take small steps toward your goals and be patient with yourself. Life after divorce can be a time of renewal and growth, and while it may be tough, you have the strength to create a fulfilling and joyful future for both yourself and your children.
Prioritize self-care. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. When you nurture your own well-being, you’re better equipped to care for your family. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help or lean on your support system. Life as a mom is busy and demanding, but you don’t have to do it all alone.
